This one goes out to Lauren M. Congrats!!!!!!!!!
Titanic (1953)
This version of the Titanic story was made long before Leo was around and is in black and white. Although I love the 1997 version so much I am never going to review it here, this version is very close to being tied with it. It is a more human and realistic version of the story...you could believe that the people the story focuses on were real (and i think they were based on actual people. Barbara Stanwyck stars as a woman who is taking her two children away from their lives traveling around Europe, back home to America without her husband. Her husband however is on the trip as well, to her dismay. It is never clarified, but it can be assumed that they are going to get divorced or that barb is at least not happy in the marriage. Her husband, Richard and her share their few confrontations, and it all leads up to the fateful night of April 14 when they must face the inevitability of separation and their realization that they do love each other.
Titanic 1997 is one of the greatest movies ever made, but this version has better acting and a much more realistic romance (not one that just suddenly forms after 2 days of knowing each other).
For a 50s movie, this has excellent effects as well, although the huge error is that they show the ship sinking in one whole piece, which of course is false. But it can't be blamed because they didn't find the ship until almost thirty years later.
If you are looking for a historical documentary about the ship itself, this really doesn't have all that jazz. It concentrates 95% on the people, and the sinking of the ship itself is only shown in the last 5 minutes of the film.
There are a few things that are almost exactly the same as the '97 version, that I found interesting:
-a young, quick romance (Jack and Rose, and then Barb's daughter Annette and Giff, a guy she meets onboard. Annette and Giff don't get as um..."attached" to each other though)
-the line "I don't understand why they announce meals like its a calvary charge" (by kathy bates/"molly" and then richard)
-"Nearer my God to Thee" playing during the sinking and a closeup of Captain Smith
-a long, emotional shot of a woman looking up at her man as she is lowered into the lifeboat (Jack and Rose, Richard and Barb, Annette and Giff)
-A young guy telling a young girl that going on the trip was the best thing that ever happened to him, even though he is probably going to die. (Jack to Rose, and Giff, who I'm not saying is going to die or not die, to Annette)
They also have a historical documentary commentary on the DVD which i thought was really cool, cause I like the history of the Titanic as well.
I love both movies

'97 (just for the record)- :) :) :) :) :)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (my AA dance outfit was inspired by the opening sequence)
This is definitely a classic, but it was different from what I expected. Audrey plays independent Holly, from New York, who meets a guy in her apartment building and struggles with the idea of actually fall
in love with someone. Audrey is beautiful, and has a wonderful singing voice, but she wasn't the actress I thought she was. Not bashing her or anything, it just wasn't what i expected. She is an amazingly convincing crier, and I thought it was a cute romance movie. However, the title doesn't really fit in as much as I thought. She actually only goes to Tiffany's (department store) twice in the whole film, and the rest is symbolism.
definitely something worth adding to your "classic films" experience

Monster in Law
Eh...this was an okay movie. It has one or two funny moments, but you can ultimately predict the ending. Unfortunately, it has Jennifer Lopez, who I feel always plays the same character- poor, unhappy/bad job Latina girl who falls in love with a rich guy. Jane Fonda is okay, but she still didn't save the movie for me. It wasn't romantic or even that funny......the only good part was when J.Lo has an allergic reaction to peanuts and her face swells up to the size of her butt.

Spanglish
I'm still pondering if I liked this movie or not...it was pretty funny I guess, and there is a little romance, but I can't figure out if it ended how I wanted it to or not. I guess it ended how I thought was best, but its confusing...
Flor (Flower in Spanish) can't speak English, and she goes to work for the Claskeys, a always on the move American family. Deb, the mom, has questionable sanity and in the funniest scene, struggles to pronounce "Flor". Florrrr, the Spanish r rolling. She can't get it and keeps saying "floor". John (Adam Sandler), her husband, is a four star chef, and although he loves her, has trouble handling her ups and downs.
As Flor becomes closer to the family, her daughter comes to live with her at their house and Christina, her daughter, becomes attached to Deb. Flor does not her daughter to change who she is though, and then Deb and John have problems, Flor and John seem to have something...its all very confusing.
But that's the movies main message- life is confusing. This works for me, cause I am either confused or confusing someone else.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Wow, this was a weird movie. Really weird. But I kind of liked it (I am not creepy though!), mainly for the songs. It's so weird its funny and a because you have no clue what is going on, it is almost entertaining. Susan Sarandon is in it (30 years younger though) as Janet, along with "Brad", her fiancee, who are both stranded in the middle of no where when their car dies. They go to the spooky castle, a weird hunchback guy answers the door etc....They are totally freaked out. Then.........a man named Tim Curry...
as Dr. Frank N Furter, who has made a man named Rocky (the whole Frankenstein thing, just he is a "playmate" for Frank and has the body of Mr. Olympia. Then more weird stuff happens, singing etc.
Tim Curry though, must be very comfortable and sure of his sexuality, as he really gets into character.................and can walk perfectly in 5 inch stilettos..........
The music is pretty catchy. I like the opening song "science fiction, double feature"
Also- Time Warp....I've memorized the dance.
:) :) :) :)
"Let's Do the Time Warp againnnn!"
Weird review I know, just like the movie!
